Canadian fintech firm Nuvei has bolstered its Asia-Pacific foothold with the acquisition of Paywiser Japan, including its licence from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed.

Paywiser is a regulated and supervised financial institution, licenced as an Electronic Money Institution (EMI), authorised to issue cards, electronic wallets, and other forms of e-money for individual and corporate users to make payments.

This licence facilitates the company’s launch of direct acquiring capabilities in Japan, encompassing all “major card schemes” and enhancing connectivity with relevant alternative payment methods (APMs) in the country.

The establishment of Nuvei’s Japan headquarters in Tokyo adds to its existing Asia-Pacific presence in China, Hong Kong, Australia, and Singapore. This is supported by a team of over 200 payments experts on the ground throughout the region.

The company’s payment solutions are claimed to help Japanese businesses scale domestically and internationally, while providing global businesses a market entry through a single integration to the Nuvei core platform.

Nuvei chair and CEO Philip Fayer said: “This expansion aligns with our strategic priorities to continue growing our global footprint, offer localised payments experiences on a global scale, and enable our customers to get closer to their customers through payments, wherever they are and however they want to pay.

“With our modular payments technology and extensive local expertise, we’re well positioned to help businesses of all sizes accelerate their growth within this dynamic ecosystem.”

This expansion follows Nuvei’s launch of a new omnichannel payment solution tailored for the UK gaming sector.

The platform is engineered to simplify payment processes for gaming operators, enabling them to manage all payment channels through a single API.
