The smartcard company is to help the Chinese retail giant expand its e-payment business in Hong Kong.

By GlobalDataWhen using another device to browse Alibaba’s Taobao website, users with NFC phones or tablets will be able to use an app to scan QR codes on the screen and pay by Octopus.
For the time being there is a payment cap of HKD1000 ($129), and there will be a charge of 1.5% per payment.
Users must have NFC enabled phones, and register their Octopus account with the mobile app to use the service.
Octopus, which says it is used by 1.3m Hong Kong residents has proved popular in the Guangdong province of mainland China.
The company now looks set to help Alibaba make the jump in the opposite direction – from the mainland to Hong Kong.
