SIA has developed a new digital payment platform to pay for tickets at Milan subway system in Italy.

The new platform will enable the passengers to pay for tickets at the turnstiles swiftly using MasterCard and Visa contactless cards.

Based on SIA’s technological infrastructure, the service is connected to all the contactless cards- compatible POS terminals at 113 stations in the Milan subway network.

The system was first launched in the Italian city of Milan by ATM and is currently used in various cities including London, Chicago, Singapore, Moscow and Vancouver.

At Milan subway, it will enable ATM to authorise, manage and settle transactions.

SIA deputy CEO Nicola Cordone said: “With the launch of the new contactless card payment service on the entire Milan subway network, SIA is continuing in its innovation process also in the mobility and public transport sector in Italy.

“Our main objective is to improve the travel experience of passengers thanks to the availability of simple, reliable and secure digital payment services.

“This new initiative is part of the broader digitisation program of the country in which SIA has actively participated for years through technology solutions aimed at making public sector processes more efficient and simplifying daily use of the services by citizens.”

Besides SIA and ATM, the project received technical assistance from Aitek, Intesa Sanpaolo and Microsoft.
