Around 675 million smart payment cards were
shipped globally in 2009, a 16 percent increase from 2008,
according to the latest figures from the Smart Payment
Association.
The Americas showed the biggest increase in
smartcard shipments with a 36 percent growth rate. Asia Pacific
returned an 18 percent increase and Europe and CISMEA grew by 14.5
percent.
“The growth of chip-based payment in these
tough operating times is incredibly encouraging. There is clear
demand for innovative, secure and convenient payment methods. [The]
2009 figures show the industry is in good shape to take full
advantage of the opportunities,” said Christoph Siegelin, president
of SPA.
The SPA also reported that contactless
technology increased its market share as dual interface shipments
grew by 150 percent.
The number of cards containig Dynamic
Data Authentication (DDA) security technology increased by 34
percent, highlighting the level of industry concern over
fraud.
The SPA expects the smartcard expansion to
continue at a similar pace this year.
