South African mobile payment company Zapper has formed a new partnership to introduce Mastercard’s digital payment service, Masterpass, at more than 20,000 of its merchants across the country.

In addition, customers using Zapper app will be able to pay with their smartphones at approximately 50,000 Masterpass-enabled businesses in South Africa.

Users can add their credit, debit or cheque cards, irrespective of the bank, into the Masterpass wallet.

The app can then be used to scan a Zapper QR code displayed at point-of-sale (POS) or online, and the transaction will be authenticated using ATM PIN or a one-time code sent to the customer’s mobile phone.

Customers will also be able to scan Pay@ and SnapScan codes for their transactions.

Mastercard South Africa division president Mark Elliott said: “We’re excited to work with Zapper as part of our strategy to deliver the seamless, on-demand experience today’s mobile consumer expects at every payment point.

“It is only by driving collaboration across the payments ecosystem that we can deliver secure, interoperable and convenient payments systems that will bring us closer to a cashless world.”

Zapper South Africa CEO Will Heygate said: “Through this partnership we are able to extend our offering to users and merchants alike, benefitting all parties and empowering more people to adopt mobile payments as their preferred payment option.”
