US company Square has expanded overseas by launching its mobile credit card reader and tablet POS register apps in Japan.
The mobile payment platform is partnering with Sumitomo Mitsui Card Corporation, the company that helped introduce the Visa card to Japan.
Square chief executive and co-founder, Jack Dorsey, said: "I am honoured to introduce Square to a country with a rich history of design, innovation and tradition. Square shares the same values and attention to detail in our products. Our tools are made to enable business owners to create a delightful, seamless experience for their customers."
The Square reader will charge Japanese merchants a transaction rate of 3.25% per card swipe.
Square’s arrival in Japan comes one year after PayPal launched its PayPal Here payment system in the country.
