American mobile payments firm Square has launched its Virtual Terminal service in the UK, allowing its customers to accept payments directly on their computer.

The new service has been aimed at online service providers, contractors and other vendors, who do most of their businesses through computers.

The Virtual Terminal, which will allow businesses to accept payments through the Square dashboard, is free to sign up and charges a 2.5% transaction fee for Visa, MasterCard and American Express cards.

Square already launched its Virtual Terminal service in the US, Australia, Canada and Japan. The platform has already processed over $300m of transactions.

Sarah Harvey, who leads the UK operations of Square, said: “Virtual Terminal is something our sellers have been asking us for and has already proved hugely popular around the world. We are pleased to be bringing it to the UK’s thriving community of small and medium-sized businesses.”
