Tigo Tanzania has partnered with Mastercard and local fintech firm Selcom to offer Materpass QR on its mobile financial services platform, Tigo Pesa.
Set to be deployed in the second quarter of this year, the service can be used to scan a quick response (QR) code through the Tigo Pesa app on a smart phone to pay for goods and services at merchants.
Customers using a feature phone will be able to pay by typing in the unique merchant code provided under the merchant’s QR code.
Tigo Tanzania managing director Simon Karikari said: “Tigo Pesa is not only a payments enabler, it is a platform where customers can perform a full range of financial services, where Masterpass is a strong addition to the range of products and services our customers can enjoy in their daily lives.”
Karikari further added that the addition will bolster security and enable fast, convenient payments for Tigo Pesa users.
Raghav Prasad, division president for Sub-Saharan Africa at Mastercard believes that easy-to-access and secure digital payment solutions are required in Africa, where more than 85% of retail transactions are being done in cash.
