Swedish caller identification app Truecaller has purchased Chillr, an Indian multi-bank payments app launched in 2014, for an undisclosed sum.

All of Chillr’s employees will join Truecaller as part of the deal, with its co-founder Sony Joy becoming vice president at Truecaller Pay.

In the coming months, Truecaller will phase out the Chillr service while integrating some of the app’s features into its platform.

Truecaller chief strategy officer Nami Zarringhalam said: “By acquiring Chillr, we are reaffirming our commitment to mobile payments and plan to increase the adoption of it amongst our user base.

“We will, together, have a far bigger impact in this space through the foundation of the team’s expertise and a strong user base who trust our platform and uses it on a daily basis. Moving forward, the Chillr team will now become the Truecaller Pay team, leading the vision and execution for this feature.”

Truecaller, which entered the Indian digital payment space last year with Truecaller Pay, has 150 million users in the country. The firm now intends to double its team size in the country and also plans to offer consumer credit and other financial services to Indian users.
