According to a survey conducted by price comparison website GoCompare, UK adults are reluctant to the idea of contactless payments dominating the way society pays.
Over half of the 2,000 respondents were said to be ‘saddened’ by a move towards a cashless society with only a small percentage (6%) beginning to make contactless payments via a credit card. Only 3% have made transactions using their mobile phones.
The research also found that two fifths of people expect to be using contactless forms of payment by 2023, compared to only 36% who expect to still be using traditional credit cards in ten years time.
Over a quarter of the respondents assume by 2023, items will be paid for via mobile phones and 19% believe some type of biometric payment system will be used.
John Miles, business development director of GoCompare, said: "Are we ready to become a cashless society? Our research suggests that we’re not there yet. Most people think that there will always be a place for notes and coins and over half said that they will be very sad when we become a cashless society."
