Health and beauty chain store Superdrug and
food retailer Waitrose have become the latest UK companies to
implement contactless terminals.
Visa Europe and Streamline has been
commissioned to supply Superdrug with a contactless acceptance
service, starting with 50 of its stores in London and Liverpool. An
expansion and eventual coverage of all Superdrug stores is in the
pipeline for 2012.
The deal with Superdrug comes after Streamline
and Visa Europe implemented contactless technology terminals at
McDonald’s.
Darren Wilson, managing director at
Streamline, stated: “This partnership is the latest milestone in
the adoption of contactless technology by the UK’s largest
retailers. We expect to see a ‘tipping point’ in contactless
adoption over the next year or so as many more retailers adopt the
technology.”
Waitrose, meanwhile, said it would roll out
contactless POS in all its branches in the second half of the year.
It is currently trialling the service in three stores.
According to Visa Europe’s head of
contactless, Mark Austin, the steady growth of contactless payment
terminals paves the way for mobile payments.
