Armed with their mobile phones UK consumers
are poised to make full use of m-commerce this Christmas, but
retailers are not ready for the demand a survey has found.

A survey conducted by research company
Populus, on behalf of m-retailing company Glamoo, estimates 7.7m
smartphone users want to shop using their mobile this
Christmas.

Out of the 4,000 mobile subscribers surveyed,
58% said they were worried about the issue of payment
security and 53% were concerned about retailer’s websites,
which they claim can often make it difficult to pay.

The majority of those surveyed revealed PayPal
to be the most popular payment type. The top five methods of
payment on a mobile were:

  • PayPal – 73%
  • Debit card – 56%
  • Credit card – 50%
  • Via mobile bill – 34%
  • iTunes – 26%

When asked why consumers would want to shop on
their mobiles, 59% it was to save time and 31% said for
convenience. A further 49% said they would shop on their mobile
whilst in the passenger seat of a car and 28% would do the same on
their daily commute.

“In the next three years, there will be
different developments on mobile payments as a result of large
technology investments and continuous smartphone penetration,” said
Simone Ranucci Brandimarte, CEO of Glamoo.

Glamoo estimates almost 3m smartphone users
already shop at least once a week but are limited to buying music,
games and tickets, and electronics. It claims only a handful of
retailers such as Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Amazon, John Lewis
and eBay seem to be ready for this demand as other merchants do not
seem prepared to exploit m-commerce in time for Christmas.

Payment services provider VocaLink has
conducted research into m-commerce again revealing its growing
popularity among consumers due to its perceived speed and
convenience.

Its ‘Voice of the Consumer’ report showed 42%
of UK consumers with a bank account and 50 percent of those who
already make online payments would find making a payment
immediately via a mobile phone “extremely valuable”. Customers
using a mobile payment service would also be willing to pay per
transaction.

Cloud optimisation service provider Akamai
Technologies has also found nearly 30% of respondents are using, or
plan to use, mobile devices for e-commerce.

Within this group there is a 10% core of
respondents that are already using their smartphones for retail
search, price comparison or online purchasing. In addition another
20% of respondents are planning to do this in the future, so a full
third of respondents will be using the mobile channel in the short
term for e-commerce.
