The UK population braved the cold and wet May
Day weekend to smash ATM withdrawal records by £25 million ($37
million).
Friday 30th April saw the busiest
day ever for LINK cash withdrawals totalling £590 million, beating
the previous record of £565 million set on Christmas Eve last
year.
LINK processed a record total of 13,434,665
transactions on 30th April, with 1,101,102 taking place
between the lunch hours of 12pm and 1pm.
Over £1.5 billion had been withdrawn by the
end of the Bank Holiday weekend, an increase of 9 percent on
the same period in 2009.
“For most people in the UK, queuing at a
counter to obtain cash is a thing of the past. Cash machine usage
continues to grow, with new records for cash dispensed set this
weekend,” said Edwin Schooling Latter, managing director for the
LINK Scheme.
LINK transactions are those which involve two
members of the LINK Scheme, therefore the figures exclude
withdrawals made by customers using their own banks’ or building
societies’ ATMs. Total transactions include balance enquires as
well as cash withdrawals.
