UnionPay International has formed an alliance with Australian taxi payment facilitator GM Cabs to enable the acceptance of its cards on Eftpos devices.

Currently, UnionPay is accepted at 90% of ATMs and 80% merchants across Australia. The new partnership will ensure its acceptance by all taxis in the country.

Furthermore, GM Cabs has also agreed to roll out UnionPay mobile QuickPass acceptance capability for Chinese tourists, international students and Chinese residents in Australia.

UnionPay said that the digital payment service is intended to cater to ‘customers’ change of payment habits’. Till now, UnionPay QuickPass is accepted by almost 60% of merchants in the country.

Following GM Cabs roll out, UnionPay mobile QuickPass will be initially accepted at 8,000 taxi payment terminals, with plans to include additional 25,000 terminals in the near future.

In January this year, UnionPay collaborated with car rental firm Hertz to boost the acceptance of its credit cards in Australia. The cooperation expands UnionPay acceptance from the US and Thailand to 62 of Hertz’s direct-sale Australian stores.

The alliances are part of the Chinese card giant’s efforts to expand its footprint in the South Pacific region.

At present, nearly 70% of merchants in New Zealand accept UnionPay cards, and more than 12,000 point-of-sale (POS) terminals support the mobile QuickPass service.

Furthermore, the cards and QuickPass are accepted in other South Pacific island countries such as Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
