UnionPay International has collaborated with Bank of China’s Canadian subsidiary to launch its QR code payment service in the country.
All Canadian stores of Foodymart will now accept the UnionPay QR code payment. UnionPay also introduced this service in the US through certain food and beverage merchants in the California state.
The company estimates that its QR code payment will be accepted by nearly 5,000 merchants across North America within this year.
UnionPay International CEO Cai Jianbo said: “UnionPay is expanding the scope of acceptance of mobile payment services outside of mainland China and pushing the debut of UnionPay’s QR code payment in North America, which opens new perspectives for the promotion of the UnionPay app.
“UnionPay International is expediting rolling out its innovative payment services by improving the linkage between different markets.”
UnionPay cards are accepted at almost all ATMs in the US and its credit cards are accepted at more than 80% of merchants in the country. In Canada, the cards are accepted at 90% of ATMs and more than 160,000 merchants.
