UnionPay International has signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Zimbabwe-based Steward Bank to roll out UnionPay cards and UnionPay mobile payments in Zimbabwe.
Due to the high demand for digital payments in Zimbabwe, the UnionPay cards are being accepted by many merchants in tourism and retail industries through cooperation with Barclays Africa, CABS, and other mainstream institutions. Some of them also support UnionPay QR code.
The card will be issued to local residents.
UnionPay cards will be accepted at all the POS terminals of Steward Bank this year. The card is expected to attain an acceptance rate of 80%.
Further, Steward Bank will issue 200,000 UnionPay cards in five years. This will also include Asia Prestige UnionPay theme cards.
With the opening 20,000 local merchants in the near future, Steward Bank will support UnionPay mobile QuickPass service and UnionPay QR code scanning payment service.

UnionPay cards are accepted in 50 countries and regions in Africa with acceptance rate of nearly 80%. The card’s acceptance rate has reached 100% in cities including Nairobi and Casablanca.
The cards have been issued in 11 countries and regions including Kenya, Mauritius and Seychelles. The UnionPay app allows visitors to make payments at a few merchants in Kenya, Mauritius and Djibouti.
Earlier this month, American payment solution provider Flywire renewed its cross-border payments partnership with UnionPay.
