Visa is set to launch a new pilot programme of its latest contactless payment-enabled sunglasses that allows users to pay for goods by placing them near a Visa NFC-enabled terminal.

The prototype, which was unveiled and exhibited at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas, features a tiny NFC chip that is linked to the user’s Visa account.

In order to pay, the user will just tap their sunglasses on the payment terminal to complete the transaction, instead of swiping a debit card or entering a pin.

Visa is now testing the glasses at the Quicksilver Pro and Roxy Pro surf competition in Gold Coast, Australia, which it is sponsoring.

The company wants to check whether there's any demand for the contactless sunglasses and whether any brands or banks are interested in device.

The glasses looks like a regular pair of shades and Visa has not disclosed its availability as well as the pricing.
