American payments provider Western Union has established a new technology centre in Pune, India, which will be its innovation and engineering hub in the country.
The new facility, Western Union Technology Engineering Centre (WUTEC), will be used to work on various technologies such as robotics, machine learning, predictive modelling, and biometrics.

Western Union president and CEO Hikmet Ersek said: “On the anniversary of 25 years of our service in India, this is a fitting start to a new chapter. We are extremely proud to have connected Indian diaspora from nearly every country in the world by enabling money movement to their families and loved ones.”
The firm plans to hire over 1,000 skilled professionals for the facility. The launch of the centre forms part of the firm’s broader innovation strategy to support its digital transformation.
Western Union’s other technology centres are located in Denver, Montvale, and San Francisco.
