Worldline has added WeChat Pay to its payment solution in Switzerland, allowing Chinese visitors to pay using their smartphone.
The European payments company has integrated WeChat Pay at its POS-terminals in the hope Chinese tourists will make additional purchases in Swiss stores. This comes as visitors from China spent almost CHF660m ($664m) in Switzerland in 2018.
Marc Schluep, CEO of Worldline Switzerland, said: “Merchants would like to offer their customers the smoothest user experience. We support them in achieving this. Since the integration of Alipay and WeChat Pay, Chinese customers in Switzerland can pay just as easily as they can at home.”
Increasingly, Chinese visitors are spending more money in Switzerland and in 2017 they spent an average of several hundred Swiss francs per day. In addition, the number of nights that visitors spend in in Swiss hotels is expected to grow by 13%.
One billion active users
WeChat Pay is part of WeChat, a product of the Chinese internet group Tencent. It began as a messaging service similar to WhatsApp and currently has one billion active users. Meanwhile, a number of services have since been added to the application.
Merchants using Worldline’s services can add this payment system to the options they offer their customers. No additional steps are required when using WeChat Pay as scanning the QR-Code is all that is needed.
