London-based WorldRemit has rolled out Tigo Pesa mobile wallet in Tanzania, enabling its customers to transfer money to friends and family quickly and at low cost.

The new payment method, which complements existing transfer options for Tanzania such as bank transfer, cash pickup and mobile airtime top-up, is available from 35 nations.

Users can make a transfer across the globe using a computer, smartphone or tablet.

World Remit CEO Ismail Ahmed said: "I am delighted that WorldRemit is now able to offer Tigo Pesa as a way of receiving money in Tanzania."

"At WorldRemit we aim to give people as many money transfer options as possible, from bank accounts and cash pickup to mobile wallets and airtime top-up. This is the sort of choice and flexibility that people demand in a modern, connected world," Ahmed added.

According to the World Bank report, migrants from Tanzania sent $75m back home in 2013, while remittance payments to Tanzania from overseas have increased two fold since 2008.
