Pan-African banking conglomerate Ecobank has introduced a virtual debit card, which is integrated with the bank’s digital banking app Ecobank Mobile.
In a statement, the bank said that its current, savings, and Xpress account holders who use the app can get access to the virtual card for all their online payment needs.
Ecobank Nigeria head of consumer bank Korede Demola-Adeniyi said: “The Ecobank Virtual Card is a safe and secure way to make online payments without having to use your plastic debit, prepaid or credit card.
“Customers may use it for their online shopping needs, share or create gift cards for loved ones who can benefit from this innovative form of payment.
“The Ecobank Virtual Card is stored on the mobile banking profile of each Ecobank customer who requests one.
“Access to the card is password protected and encrypted for user safety.
“Deleting or blocking a virtual card is very easy and can be done so at the touch of a button when logged into the Ecobank Mobile App.”
Demola-Adeniyi added that the card also supports subscription payments and can be used for platforms including Apple Music, Netflix, or others.
Cardholders can control their spending by adding the required amount of funds in the card.
They can also choose to receive SMS alerts or email notifications every time they transact, for real-time tracking.
The bank customers can activate the virtual card through the mobile app itself, eliminating the need for visiting a branch.
Additionally, Ecobank is also offering co-branded virtual gift cards to e-commerce giants, with the option to set up usage restrictions on their website or apps.
